A school security officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure school environment, fostering an optimal learning environment, and acting as a deterrent to unsafe or poor behavior. They patrol the campus, monitor student behavior, enforce school and local policies, intervene in physical encounters, monitor security cameras, monitor visitors, and report unsafe or unhealthy conditions. They also maintain order and discipline, prevent crime, investigate student violations of school board policies, and detain students violating the law or school board policies on school property or at school-sponsored events.
- Assist with traffic control each day requiring the officer to assist vehicles coming into and exiting the school campus.
- Provide campus patrol (including parking areas)
- Watch for any irregularities requiring assistance and summons administration, nurses, police, fire or first aid personnel as necessary
- Examine doors, windows, and gates to ensure security; uses keys to open and close buildings; monitors closed buildings for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities
- Monitor the perimeter of the campus, campus cameras and assists with any needed video retrieval
- Inform and warn violators of any campus rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles
- Have knowledge of fire systems, and respond to alarms and take appropriate corrective action
- Complete and submit reports concerning any incidents, unusual occurrences and violations that might affect the safety and security of persons or property on campus.
- Remain alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/or security code violators; approaches suspicious persons and/or notifies police as appropriate; may be required to confront and/or detain violators, as needed, until police arrive
- Attend large group assemblies and stay vigilant for any security concerns
- Investigate issues on campus as needed
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Education
Experience
- Current Commissioned POST Certified Police Officer
or
- At least 10 years on a police force and must have left the department in good standing
- Applicant is required to be eligible to obtain LEOSA certification
- Must have an armed guard license from the State of Tennessee
- Must have completed the most recent active shooter training as required by the Safe School Act in the State of Tennessee or
- Five years of security or law enforcement experience desired
- Current Tennessee Armed Officer License
- Specific and appropriate firearm training
- Must have completed the most recent active shooter training as required by the Safe School Act in the State of Tennessee
- CPR and First Aid Training preferred
- Ability to be a first responder for emergencies by providing security and medical assistance
